Armi Torres (PhD), Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

Armi works on taxonomy and distribution of freshwater fishes in FishBase. She also handles the IUCN Red List and CITES updates in FishBase. She’s involved in organizing trainings on freshwater fish identification and conservation in collaboration with national and international partners.

Her research interest includes freshwater fish taxonomy, biodiversity assessment and conservation of freshwater ecosystems, and assessment of threatened status of fishes. She has assessed the conservation status of endemic cyprinids of Lake Lanao, the largest lake in Mindanao. She is currently assisting the IUCN Freshwater Biodiversity Unit for the global assessment of the extinction risk of freshwater fishes that are native to the Philippines for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. As a member of the nationally created Philippine Aquatic Red List Committee (PARLC) under Freshwater Body Fishes and Ornamental Aquatic Fishes subcommittees, she is very keen to work with other conservationists to prevent species extinction in the country.

Watching romantic comedy Korean dramas is her main stressbuster. She is a superfan of the multitalented actor Park Bo Gum. Armi is also an ARMY, refers to a fan or the fandom name of the world-renowned South Korean boy band BTS. In her spare time, she also indulges in fangirling over BTS by watching different videos from live performances to interviews. But there is one thing she loves to do passionately and consistently.  She begins her mornings with devotions. This is her “me time” —– a morning lifestyle and a commitment.
