Dr. Lucas Brotz’ expertise lies in all things jellyfish, with a particular focus on understanding the dynamics of changing jellyfish populations and fisheries, shedding light on the dynamic role of the cnidarian group in marine ecosystems including human activities.
As the Q-quatics’ Cnidaria Scientist, Dr. Brotz curates and enhances cnidarian data within SeaLifeBase, helping to ensure that information remains comprehensive, accurate and accessible to researchers and the public.
Dr. Brotz is also affiliated with the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries at the University of British Columbia as an Honorary Research Associate, leading the reconstruction and update of global jellyfish catches for the Sea Around Us initiative. He has also contributed extensively to international scientific efforts, serving on numerous committees and working groups including:

Outside of his scientific pursuits, Dr. Brotz is passionate about surfing, a hobby that reflects his deep connection with the ocean.
