The Q-quatics’ search process for four (4) positions: three (3) Research Assistants and one (1) Software Engineer has began. Qualifications and requirements of the said job call are found below. We are hoping to attract interests from the widest pool of young talents. 

Quantitative Aquatics, Inc. (www.q-quatics.org) is a non-stock, non-profit, non-governmental organization established in the Philippines in February 2017. Q-quatics was created to support the assembly and dissemination of key data on living aquatic resources for the development of research tools in collaboration with international partners. As such, Q-quatics manages the global biodiversity information systems FishBase (www.fishbase.org), SeaLifeBase (www.sealifebase.org), and the global aquatic biogeography initiative, AquaMaps (www.aquamaps.org).

Q-quatics also supports the cutting-edge databases and research developed by the Sea Around Us (www.seaaroundus.org), which provides policy options for marine fisheries resources, their sustainable use and possible responses to climate change. As such, it partners with the Sea Around Us in identifying projects that would help initiate or maintain research on global fisheries and biodiversity conservation.

RESEARCH ASSISTANTS (3)

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Quantitative Aquatics, Inc. seeks 3 Research Assistants from local pool of professionals to join us  with the following tasks:

  1. Underwater video-analysis
  • identify fish species in underwater videos and pictures;
  • with software, measure individual fishes in underwater videos; and
  • assist other team members in the fish identification task.
  1. Data encoding
  • extract and encode pertinent information from the literature (gray and published) into the databases;
  • perform extensive literature search from printed and online sources; and
  • assist in preparations of project reports, presentations and trainings.

One successful candidate will be trained in the use of software to census underwater videos and use of FishBase to identify fish species. Supervision for this position will be given by the Taxonomy Theme Lead.

The two remaining successful candidates will work under the joint supervision of the Distribution, Taxonomy, and Traits Theme Leads.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: We are looking for graduates of BS Fisheries or BS Biology (preferably major in Zoology, Ecology, Wildlife or Systematics). Knowledge in aquatic biodiversity is preferred.

Experience: New graduates will learn a highly useable research skill and are encouraged to apply.

Languages: Excellent command of the English language both written and verbal. Good knowledge of the Chinese language to be able to extract information from Chinese-language publications is highly preferred.

Knowledge and Competencies

  1. Excellent organizational skills and attention to details.
  2. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  3. Could work effectively with minimum supervision, good time management skills and high degree of initiative and resourcefulness; and
  4. Proficient knowledge of computer software, e.g., MS Office applications.

SOFTWARE ENGINEER (1)

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Quantitative Aquatics, Inc. seeks a Software Engineer from a pool of local professionals with the following responsibilities:

  1. program dynamic webpages for information systems maintained by Q-quatics (e.g. FishBase, SeaLifeBase),
  2. handle the maintenance of the Q-quatics suite of websites, and
  3. perform all other related duties that may be assigned from time to time by the supervisor.

For this position, supervision will come from the IT Theme Lead.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: We are looking for people with a BS Computer Science degree or other computer-related courses.

Expérience: New graduates will learn a highly useable programming skill and are encouraged to apply.

Languages: Excellent command of the English language both written and verbal.

Knowledge and Competencies

  1. Good experience in PHP and CSS, JavaScript,
  2. Good experience with database systems such as MySQL and PostgreSQL,
  3. Good knowledge of SQL and relational databases,
  4. Good knowledge and/or experience on the following are desirable: Linux environment, Java development, R programming, version control systems (Subversion, Git), cloud computing administration (Amazon Web Service),
  5. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team-oriented environment, and
  6. Could work effectively with minimum supervision, has good time management skills and high degree of initiative and resourcefulness.
